will know how much I go on about
the glorious shades of purple
in the Winter landscape.
On walks in the cold months
I am always exclaiming
over my beloved "winter purple"
as I love finding this rich color

seem to be
a colorless landscape.

So far this year,
it is an early
"winter red"
that I am seeing everywhere
and I am quite enjoying
this newly recognized addition
to Winter's regal palette.

to it's barer forms

We stepped out of the woods
to suddenly find ourselves
in a high, open space
that was ringed around with a fog
so thick
that we could not see the valley floor.

It was getting dark
and we had already decided
to turn back at this point.

By the time we re-entered the trees
the bank had rolled through,
revealing crisply green spires in the clear distance
and leaving no sign
that it had been there
at all.

and how to can my results
late in the summer,
but I have had so much fun
playing with the bounty of fruit
that was still in season.

Some of the jars have been given away with love
and the others are settled comfortably into the cupboard.

I will periodically open the pantry door
to admire
and coo
at the jars
that are glowing like embers,
holding the bright suggestion
and treasured sweetness
of Summertime's fire
even as the flame of that season has dimmed
and the days here have shortened.

By my highly mathematical calculations
I've come to determine
that most people generally seem
to hold Winter to be their least favorite season
and Summer to be their favorite.

It is my hypothesis
that the love of the in-between months
is where one really makes their stand.

Is it the blustery unfurling
of new green,
or the startling flame
of trees topped in amber that you love?
Is it the quivering of barely contained growth
or the gathering in of light
in the face of darkness descending
that makes you feel like you are coming home?

While I came around quite a lot
to the delights of Springtime this year
(in large part because of this book's influence, I now think),
and I know I will be very glad to see it again
come March & April,
if there is a camp for Autumn,
put me in it.

Back here, again.
We call it our "backyard beach"
because
(even though
it's a 5 hour drive to get there)
we have visited this place
every year
since I was a baby
and a summer would feel
preposterously incomplete
without our trip there.

While the photos on Folkloric

it has been a stressful few months
and this trip
felt almost medicinal.

I took a walk yesterday
with my favorite walking companion
and we reminded each other
and agreed
that the smell of blackberries
just past their peak of fullness,
hanging so heavy on the vine
that they fall to juice in your hand
when you try to pick them
and baking slowly
in a sun that is already setting,
earlier than it was setting just last week
is the most beautiful,
heartbreaking,
and utterly golden smell
of the time that is
Late Summer,
Early Fall.

We walked,
taking deep, gasping breaths,
cherishing this scent
of mourning and thankfulness and memory,
and then we waded through the brambles
and gathered enough of these late berries
to bake one more blackberry cobbler.

Out to breakfast with a dear one.

I've been missing breakfast lately--
slow and leisurely breakfasts
are impossible on early mornings
where I am up and out the door,
making sure I catch my bus.
My new job
begins earlier than my old one,
so my morning routine
is still in transition.

On the weekends, I think,
I will try to do breakfast,
do it up special and hearty--
whether at home or out.
It is my favorite meal, after all.

was a continual reminder
of how much I am
a Pacific Northwest girl.

it does feel like contemplating
moving away
from another family member,
and I feel certain
(amazingly so),
that no matter where my path leads me

We stopped by,
on our long drive home
and we bought a pie,

with all the people
who had told me of the place.

I haven't had much to say

I have been too busy
to formulate my thoughts.

I begin a new job on Monday
and I am nervous and excited together.

The boy's new job this past January
significantly altered the patterns
and the flow of our lives,

So far this month of June,

and endearingly earnest Quebecois band
Le Vent du Nord
has been the perfect soundtrack.
They are especially good to listen to
while cooking in the early evenings
with the windows open
and no one home yet but me,
where I can dance about and sing along
even though I don't understand the words.
This song in particular
sounds like summertime to me.

that the yellow, sunflower-like blossom
that grows all over the hillsides there

I thought it was time (for both)
as my late violets
had succumbed to an over-watery demise
and I had not shot a satisfactory self-portrait
since this one from last August

and speak on issues dear to me.
It was heartening
to see so many people gathered.

(I took so long)
for a bouquet
of the last of the tulips.

Every time
I walked past the table
over which these flowers presided
I remarked on their beauty
(their joyful individuality!)
and I must have done so
with such unconscious frequency
that I eventually exasperated
my dear boyfriend
who
somehow
does not share
as fervent an admiration
for this bouquet
as I do.

In the studio recently:
charcoal drawings on grey paper
(with white conté crayon added to the first one,
the rest not).

I have decided,
that when it comes to charcoal,
I greatly prefer
working on grey paper
as opposed to white.

Unlike white paper,
grey encourages
to leave untouched
the spaces between
the marks being added
and the midtones already there,
reminding me
that it is usually those spaces
that are what
really make the drawing.

On a recent trip to the Zoo:
The mighty fruit bat!

He was adorable and sinister
at the same time.

his delicate, mouse face
and the grasping hook
on the end of his wing
that seemed too large
and too jagged
for his small, furry body.

is the surprise of seeing

This roll was taken over the course
of two weeks
(unusual for me).

a market bouquet (at the height of freshness)!
a slice of cake (waiting like a secret)!
sunsets,
and lavender scents,
and Springtime light!

I just finished re-reading The Secret Garden,
and I've finally found an edition that I like.

I'm quite particular about the illustrations,
and I trawled several bookstores to find the right ones.
This version by Inga Moore
is even better than what I thought to look for--
the early scenes
of the dormant garden
are my favorite.

It may be "a children's book"
but it's the perfect one to read in the Springtime:

"'Eh!' he said, and as he crumpled the rich black soil she saw he was sniffing up the scent of it, 'there doesn't seem to be no need for no one to be contrary when there's flowers an' such like, an' such lot's o' friendly wild things runnin' about makin' homes for themselves, or buildin' nests an' singin' an' whistling, does there?'

On an evening walk
through the side streets of my neighborhood
I indulged myself
and photographed shot after shot
of Springtime's beautiful offerings.

I climbed a hill
and over-looked the city
under a striking sunset,
and I felt still
and exultant
at once.

A few drops of rain
warned me back down
and reaching the bottom,
I ran the last way home
protecting my camera from the wet.

Sunshine in the woods,
sunshine on my counter.

Homemade Lemon Curd

+8 tbs. butter
+Zest of 3 lemons
+1/2 c. fresh lemon juice
+1 1/2 c. sugar
+6 eggs, beaten

Combine butter, zest, lemon juice, and sugar in a double boiler set over simmering water (don't forget the water below the boiler or your pan will burn--I have done this). When the butter has melted but before the mixture gets too warm, gradually whisk in the beaten eggs. Continue to cook, stirring constantly, for ~15 minutes or until the curd is thickened to the consistency of thin pudding. Remove from heat and let stand for 15 more minutes. Place curd in a sterilized container and store in the refrigerator.

We were gifted this beautiful planter the other day.
For its health
I've since moved it outside,
but while it was indoors
it sat near the window
next to the ghosts
of last year's summer tomatoes.

I'm torn--
should I buy tomato starts again?
The only space I have to grow them
doesn't get enough light
so they tangled into
a man-sized wildness on our balcony,
growing up and up and up,
seeking out the sun.
A tomato forest
right outside your front door
can be quite appealing
in a funny way,
