The view
out the front of the house,
and the view
out the back.

Come Outside - The Melodic

Porch scenes.

This summer
has been so unusually hot and rainless
and even the heartiest of blooms
have needed near-constant watering.
As I found in the Spring,
it is a joy to discover plants to add
to this land of ours
that I grow more familiar with
as each month passes.

Enjoying this summer:
The music of PBS's Wolf Hall (as well as the show itself!)
Sally Mann's utterly captivating memoir
homemade ice creams from this cookbook
this live song,
and all the fresh fruit we can eat.

A Springtime version
of this post.

April 13, 2015

A new self-portrait,
the first I've taken in well over a year.

It feels fitting
to be reflected in the window
overlooking the backyard garden
that I have spent so much time in
and have so come to love.

This is me, now.

I won't soon forget
this view from our window,
even as some Springtime rains
came through recently
and turned these fleeting blossoms
to pink snow
on the ground.

As we move through
our first Winter in this house
it has felt like
our backyard has given us
a suprise
every week.

In the frenzy of the Fall,
I had no idea
that this spindly-looking tree
was actually
a steadfast Witch-hazel
until it began to unfurl
it's wirey red clusters
in early January.

I put my head back
and marvelled
and laughed out loud at the discovery.

The camellia buds out back are swelling,
and who knows what color they will be
when they finally burst forth?

After living
in the same apartment
for 5 years
I am slowly getting used to
how the light falls,
and when,
in this house of ours.

As the seasons change,
and thus the light changes,
everything is new.

I could drink tea
and watch out the window
all day.

In the quiet,
with the house to myself,
I am content to sit here for hours.
